How to Answer "Tell Me About Yourself" (Framework + Examples)
The most common interview opener trips up great candidates. Here's a simple Present–Past–Future framework, a worked example, and the mistakes to avoid.
"Tell me about yourself" is the first question in almost every interview — and the one people most often fumble. It's not an invitation to recite your résumé. It's your one chance to frame the story the interviewer carries through the rest of the conversation.
Use the Present–Past–Future framework
- Present — who you are now, in one line: your current role and a strength relevant to this job.
- Past — the 2–3 experiences that got you here, chosen to match the role you're interviewing for.
- Future — why this role, at this company, is the logical next step.
A worked example
"I'm a backend engineer with four years building payment systems. I started on a small fintech team where I owned our fraud-detection pipeline end to end, then moved to a larger company where I led the migration to event-driven services. I'm looking to go deeper on distributed systems at scale, which is exactly why this role stood out."

- Going chronological from childhood. Start where it's relevant.
- Listing everything. Curate to the job description.
